The Leicester Challenger: Taking on the Big Names in Metal, Resin, and Plastic

For over a decade, the tabletop industry has been dominated by a few major players. Whether it’s the plastic kits from Games Workshop, the metal ranges from Warlord Games, or the resin offerings from Mantic, the "professional grade" label has traditionally been locked behind massive corporations and overseas supply chains.

At Gifts for Geeks, we're hoping that’s about to change. We aren't just hobbyists with a few 3D printers; we are a manufacturing entity reshoring the hobby to Leicester. Our new range is being engineered to directly compete with the established metal, resin, and thermoplastic ranges of the industry’s biggest names.

Phase 1: The Master Standard (SLA is just the start)

While desktop SLA resin printing is a fantastic tool for the home hobbyist, it’s not the end-goal for a professional range. To compete with the finish of a Games Workshop kit, you need industrial-grade masters. We are currently prototyping our 40k-style futuristic models using Temperature Resistant Resin (Ultra White).

  • Why this matters: These aren't just "prints." They are high-temp masters capable of surviving the vulcanisation and moulding processes required for mass-market manufacturing.
  • The Result: Sharpness and durability that matches—and aims to exceed—the industry standard for high-end boutique resin.

Direct Competition: Metal, Resin, and Plastic

Our roadmap for the Unit 6 AT facility is clear. We are moving toward a multi-material production line designed to go head-to-head with current market leaders:

  • Professional Resin: Utilising our high-temp masters to produce crisp, detailed miniatures that rival the best resin kits on the market.
  • White Metal: Bringing back the classic weight and "heft" for skirmish games and character models, competing directly with the traditional metal ranges of Warlord and Mantic.
  • Thermoplastic (Injection Moulding): Our ultimate goal. We are investing in the tech to bring mass-produced plastic kits back to Leicester, cutting out the thousands of miles of shipping and months of delay associated with overseas production.

Why Leicester? Why Now?

The "big names" have long relied on global shipping and outsourcing. By building our own 16-printer R&D hub and moving toward industrial moulding, we are insulating ourselves from global supply chain volatility.

We are making miniatures in the heart of the UK. This means faster releases, lower carbon footprints, and a "Made in Britain" quality that players can trust.
